About the Team
The West Valley Swim & Dive Team is made up of student athletes in sixth through eighth grades at West Valley Middle School who are interested in developing their skills as swimmers and divers while fostering a love of the sport. The swim portion of the team is coached by coaches hired by a volunteer parent board. The diving portion of the team is coached by coaches affiliated with the Tennessee Aquatics (TNAQ) Diving Program. The WVSDT is considered a community sport by Knox County Schools. It is a dues-paying member of the Knox-Area Middle School Swim League (KMSSL), which is dedicated to the support and growth of middle school swimming in the Knoxville area.
SEASON
The middle school swim season runs September through January with meets beginning in late October or early November. The team competes in dual or tri meets against other middle schools who are KMSSL members. Occasionally, the team also participates in combined meets – combines – with high school teams who are part of the Knox-Area Interscholastic Swim League (KISL).
Meets are typically held on Sunday afternoons with the exception of invitationals and the KMSSL Championship meet, which are sometimes held on Saturdays. Practices are usually held two to three nights a week with days and times set by the coaching staff each year based on pool availability. The swim practice schedule will be different than the dive practice schedule and sometimes the practices will overlap. Practices and meets are held at the pool facilities on the UT campus, either the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center (Allan Jones) or the Student Aquatic Center (SAC). Occasionally, coaches will arrange for additional practices or meets at other facilities, as well.
